A susceptible cell has a functional receptor for a given virus - the cell may or may not be able to support viral replication
A resistant cell has no receptor - it may or may not be competent to support viral replication
A permissive cell has the capacity to replicate virus - it may or may not be susceptible
A susceptible AND permissive cell is the only cell that can take up a virus particle and replicate it
病毒的常见宿主
Animal viruses at first could not be routinely propagated in cultured cells，Most viruses were grown in laboratory animals，其中鸡胚对多种病毒敏感
没有细胞培养，就没有病毒感染过程的发现，该发现获得了1954年诺贝尔奖。

Multiplicity of infection (MOI)的定义
Number of infectious particles ADDED per cell
Not the number of infectious particles each cell receives
Add 107 virus particles to 106 cells - MOI of 10 - each cell does NOT receive 10 virions
Infection depends on the random collision of virions and cells
When susceptible cells are mixed with virus, some cells are uninfected, some receive one, two, three or more particles
The distribution of virus particles per cell is best described by the Poisson distribution

附 Vincent R. Racaniello教授简介
Prof.Vincent R. Racaniello (born January 2, 1953 in Paterson, New Jersey) is a Higgins Professor in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at Columbia University’s College of Physicians and Surgeons. He is one of four virologists who has recently authored Principles of Virology, a textbook used by many teaching virology to undergraduate, medical and graduate students.
As an esteemed member of the scientific community, Racaniello has received several awards including Irma T. Hirschl, Searle Scholars, Eli Lilly and NIH Merit. He has also been a Harvey Society Lecturer at Rockefeller University, the Hilleman Lecturer at the University of Chicago, and University Lecturer at Columbia University. Racaniello has served on the editorial boards of scientific journals, including the Journal of Virology, and is a community editor for the open access journal PLOS Pathogens.
