Post-doctoral position in Arbovirus group open at IPS, Shanghai, PR China
IPS(Institut Pasteur of Shanghai) is the first international institute under the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). Founded in 2004 by CAS, the Institut Pasteur and the Shanghai Municipal Government, IPS is an independent, nonprofit life sciences institute that works closely with Chinese authorities to address public health problems. IPS creates synergies between the Institut Pasteur and CAS networks, leveraging all the assets of Shanghai, one of Asia’s leading business and technology hubs. IPS is engaged in broad research related to infectious diseases, including basic research, epidemiological investigation and vaccine research on HIV, viral hepatitis B and C, respiratory viruses, cancer-related viruses, zoonotic viruses (including mosquito-borne viruses), malaria, etc. Together with its academic and industry partners, IPS’s goal is to develop diagnostic, vaccine and therapeutic products to meet the challenges of emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases.
In group of Arbovirus, by studying both infections in mammals and insects, our global project wants to unveil the viral and/or host factors responsible for pathogenicity or resistance to infection. Using different model alphaviruses (Chikungunya…) and Flaviviruses (Dengue, Zika…), we want to explore: i) the host factors involved in entry, interspecies transmission and host susceptibility; and ii) the role of cell response in virus replication and the spreading of viruses in vivo. These understanding will help to develop new strategies to fight these public health and veterinary threats.
Job description:
This is a full-time, fixed-term position available for up to 2 years, with the possibility of extension subject to the availability of funding. The work mainly includes:
1.Pathogenesis study of emerging and re-emerging arboviruses.
2.Establish in vivo and in vitro mosquitoes infection models.
3.Study the role of host factor in virus replication and disease outbreak.
Candidates:
The successful candidate must be in possession of a PhD in Biological Sciences (mention Virology, mosquito genetics or cell biology). You must have a high level of expertise and skills in synthetic biology, molecular genetics and cloning. A demonstrable experience in working with genome editing technologies including CRISPR/Cas9 will be desirable. Demonstrable experience of working with mosquitoes would be desirable, as well as a good knowledge of insect biology, genetics and transgenesis.
You must be a highly motivated, innovative and creative individual with demonstrable ability to develop and apply new concepts, and a proactive approach to problem solving. The successful candidate must be able to organise and prioritise their own work with minimal supervision and to independently drive forward their research project.
