of small, tightly focused groups and large, multidisciplinary teams. Traditional teams of basic " G1 U* W, P1 a1 r2 L' q/ m0 Cscientists working with clinicians will be augmented by mathematicians, physicists, and+ y$ }, E- l8 C* V
population biologists, among others. Integrating new technology advances with classical 3 O7 \, `$ o0 o" [epidemiology and clinical approaches will not be a simple pedagogical exercise. Training the % ]9 G& c; r" N. o- r' q x- x7 [, E! Mnext generation of scientists who can undertake this research will require more diverse course. [: s2 T3 L* f; R
offerings, enhanced training opportunities, especially involving interdisciplinary2 v' y6 P( Z& B
collaboration and computational approaches, and instruction in teamwork. To facilitate `2 s5 T8 f1 J2 H
professional advancement, we will need to develop new strategies to recognize and reward 5 Q1 C- }4 y. Mindividual contributions to group scientific efforts as team science becomes more and more 0 I- B+ e* Y- \9 _+ H& J H( yprevalent. . P' z5 G( G% ^- c% P$ c4 l* H4 k8 j1 h. K
Systems biology approaches, large-scale genetic screens, metagenomics of host and; ^1 B9 ~9 M3 {( q4 W; X. m
viral genes from related viruses present a unique challenge for training. These approaches 5 k5 N1 p/ M* Nwill produce enormous amounts of information that will challenge our capacity to integrate it 7 {- p: Z6 W- I7 z; N2 Zinto useful conceptual frameworks. Imaging technology will reveal the dynamics of 3 n5 v& l% P3 n" [) c! Obiological interactions at every level, yet produce huge sets of data that strain current systems' w! G8 I/ I- l: \* }* J( i
for information storage and retrieval. Methods to search, screen, recover, and use this1 i$ w. l8 D/ I$ l
