This book is the direct offspring of Viral Pathogenesis,
! h! }, f) P& e' E' y* Epublished in 1997. Having read several drafts of all the
& d# ? o2 J! f. _6 T6 {chapters in Viral Pathogenesis, it was clear that the large) e% f- u! S% ]
book contained a wealth of information, but that it was
* U/ `* ~; x- \: Y K6 N2 b% ?unsuited for readers who desired an introduction to the
1 l& Y: z7 ^& l4 y* o$ x6 ktopic. From that observation sprang the plan for a short

An introductory text clearly benefits from the

the finite expertise of any single researcher. Therefore, a I/ x* \" E9 M# n( U
compromise was devised, in which each chapter was coauthored
5 ~( K4 t: Q8 Mby an expert in the specific area under consideration.. V3 a; T6 e% J$ ?$ _
This strategy was facilitated by the successful g3 r! [9 P7 t. W8 T
collaborations that had been developed during the* e; a# J7 C5 F1 Y6 U7 i5 A. v* J
preparation of Viral Pathogenesis. The text includes
