5 N' ~5 ~/ p2 {# q( K This book is the direct offspring of Viral Pathogenesis,
& F3 y% x; n, j3 zpublished in 1997. Having read several drafts of all the7 `: p j5 H/ @, ]* \
chapters in Viral Pathogenesis, it was clear that the large
4 K9 R- K) ?1 m$ C3 A' s8 qbook contained a wealth of information, but that it was
, b3 f1 y6 N3 l! U; B8 Y0 iunsuited for readers who desired an introduction to the% L' f D2 \- \; V1 S
topic. From that observation sprang the plan for a short

self-education.

coherence provided by a single author, but suffers from9 S! d2 ^: | c/ J! @
the finite expertise of any single researcher. Therefore, a

. s u2 |5 A& q* p2 Z2 ^/ ~; i* Iby an expert in the specific area under consideration.
6 i: D9 N! K7 M9 p2 V) p/ dThis strategy was facilitated by the successful
