   This book is the direct offspring of Viral Pathogenesis,
published in 1997. Having read several drafts of all the
chapters in Viral Pathogenesis, it was clear that the large
( J4 h, X$ _! W8 jbook contained a wealth of information, but that it was
3 R+ p; S4 j( A, b  H& {9 Xunsuited for readers who desired an introduction to the
topic. From that observation sprang the plan for a short
version that could be used as an introductory text or for
self-education.
An introductory text clearly benefits from the
/ B3 h- g  m' R/ y3 W6 M; T0 m7 `7 Ycoherence provided by a single author, but suffers from
3 {  V$ _4 b8 v/ cthe finite expertise of any single researcher. Therefore, a
' ^& P. v$ D# pcompromise was devised, in which each chapter was coauthored
& b+ O0 a3 i4 R0 H. C; A+ ^by an expert in the specific area under consideration.
