This book is the direct offspring of Viral Pathogenesis, Z2 m% {7 u! p- s+ T `# I
published in 1997. Having read several drafts of all the3 g" j1 |% L) | X9 T3 L
chapters in Viral Pathogenesis, it was clear that the large
( J4 h, X$ _! W8 jbook contained a wealth of information, but that it was
3 R+ p; S4 j( A, b H& {9 Xunsuited for readers who desired an introduction to the, I- m" _2 c: s4 {* I' _
topic. From that observation sprang the plan for a short X& y8 x9 e8 N& r d2 t- i, e/ Y
version that could be used as an introductory text or for! G3 e! s- N5 F# U8 C
self-education.* h" Z# [1 n$ j; A, Q
An introductory text clearly benefits from the
/ B3 h- g m' R/ y3 W6 M; T0 m7 `7 Ycoherence provided by a single author, but suffers from
3 { V$ _4 b8 v/ cthe finite expertise of any single researcher. Therefore, a
' ^& P. v$ D# pcompromise was devised, in which each chapter was coauthored
& b+ O0 a3 i4 R0 H. C; A+ ^by an expert in the specific area under consideration.
8 Q) |) [- U0 a) gThis strategy was facilitated by the successful
. O+ I& B4 [% n1 `$ ^. d# Acollaborations that had been developed during the
