This book is the direct offspring of Viral Pathogenesis,+ ^5 U( L5 e6 B3 w& z
published in 1997. Having read several drafts of all the
2 O; b3 m% \: f( [chapters in Viral Pathogenesis, it was clear that the large4 ~6 Y' t H4 Z. U) S
book contained a wealth of information, but that it was
+ A2 {7 M& X) Lunsuited for readers who desired an introduction to the

self-education.
- y" C0 F/ u$ W: E; a1 L, aAn introductory text clearly benefits from the5 Q3 r, @+ q4 [7 |- H
coherence provided by a single author, but suffers from8 O+ I" K: A. U+ j0 g( f
the finite expertise of any single researcher. Therefore, a
! Q# U) f% }3 E4 X8 Icompromise was devised, in which each chapter was coauthored9 r u4 W9 o$ Q
by an expert in the specific area under consideration.
! S. I- A' o2 P5 C2 ] A- lThis strategy was facilitated by the successful _; _* O% d! w$ z5 L4 ?1 n
collaborations that had been developed during the
