of small, tightly focused groups and large, multidisciplinary teams. Traditional teams of basic8 D7 O8 E# A( ?2 d3 f3 d4 n
scientists working with clinicians will be augmented by mathematicians, physicists, and7 {) B8 |* u& ]' M/ T/ c
population biologists, among others. Integrating new technology advances with classical
* T/ K* g9 \( m, |! Bepidemiology and clinical approaches will not be a simple pedagogical exercise. Training the
* ?1 r# W$ X7 M4 b4 inext generation of scientists who can undertake this research will require more diverse course
6 a7 R1 j+ e8 G+ I, @% Vofferings, enhanced training opportunities, especially involving interdisciplinary
; k j) U' T3 ` |6 tcollaboration and computational approaches, and instruction in teamwork. To facilitate0 r7 h0 S4 ?* T
professional advancement, we will need to develop new strategies to recognize and reward

1 h' q' q' ^6 o2 z2 M( `Systems biology approaches, large-scale genetic screens, metagenomics of host and
8 w) p* x7 V0 h) q! _: C6 vviral genes from related viruses present a unique challenge for training. These approaches. b2 [" c% `, r
will produce enormous amounts of information that will challenge our capacity to integrate it. q# k+ E1 m! A Q& y7 } O) k1 X
into useful conceptual frameworks. Imaging technology will reveal the dynamics of& C/ R$ a: p! F( W! V
biological interactions at every level, yet produce huge sets of data that strain current systems
/ k7 s1 N" R, f4 e5 lfor information storage and retrieval. Methods to search, screen, recover, and use this
' U. }/ |) i0 L8 Tinformation will provide new avenues for discovery and require a new generation of
% f, M3 m9 ~! x" M* a' mvirologists with special expertise in computational methods and information technology. |
