scientists working with clinicians will be augmented by mathematicians, physicists, and+ x" \* |2 p) c z9 X
population biologists, among others. Integrating new technology advances with classical- p; \+ M5 I, [* V( h8 O
epidemiology and clinical approaches will not be a simple pedagogical exercise. Training the3 o$ n% y( w! a! j# ^5 C3 T7 d
next generation of scientists who can undertake this research will require more diverse course
+ {5 _7 @! `1 y4 V, Fofferings, enhanced training opportunities, especially involving interdisciplinary
0 Q9 s( {, e- y" V9 ?1 Pcollaboration and computational approaches, and instruction in teamwork. To facilitate
. E, M& h L' p$ W: zprofessional advancement, we will need to develop new strategies to recognize and reward
: F" P4 U* C8 I% T: K) Findividual contributions to group scientific efforts as team science becomes more and more, p3 e+ \/ X. a0 Q( a
prevalent.
8 U& o# @; g& m" B% t2 V5 h7 G2 C( L, g5 u6 i/ h9 r" O
Systems biology approaches, large-scale genetic screens, metagenomics of host and$ T3 s k! }( p/ Q4 h
viral genes from related viruses present a unique challenge for training. These approaches# g8 b! [$ X4 U( Z
will produce enormous amounts of information that will challenge our capacity to integrate it
( I! L5 |2 O6 A8 O6 Vinto useful conceptual frameworks. Imaging technology will reveal the dynamics of0 M; T; [% r: ?9 R( K- m
biological interactions at every level, yet produce huge sets of data that strain current systems4 h6 \- ~. B3 o6 u$ m# N4 D
for information storage and retrieval. Methods to search, screen, recover, and use this
" H' |7 s# o- P0 K+ f! {information will provide new avenues for discovery and require a new generation of, S2 h( C9 V% `$ a2 }. L/ V7 ]- t
virologists with special expertise in computational methods and information technology. |
