next generation of scientists who can undertake this research will require more diverse course
) m! a: x5 z1 B% u0 d1 D$ zofferings, enhanced training opportunities, especially involving interdisciplinary, f5 A% j; m! @. N; L
collaboration and computational approaches, and instruction in teamwork. To facilitate( ?/ Y' ^' N# h( V* Z x$ m% }, e
professional advancement, we will need to develop new strategies to recognize and reward
+ B2 F5 Y0 C3 r. T" `( Cindividual contributions to group scientific efforts as team science becomes more and more

Systems biology approaches, large-scale genetic screens, metagenomics of host and$ _8 A) e% Q9 P8 p ]5 Y
viral genes from related viruses present a unique challenge for training. These approaches8 I! C: f( @1 x/ X4 V: q( h$ r% X
will produce enormous amounts of information that will challenge our capacity to integrate it7 b* E2 r: d: G2 s8 Z
into useful conceptual frameworks. Imaging technology will reveal the dynamics of7 ?; O) w% i% `: R
biological interactions at every level, yet produce huge sets of data that strain current systems7 V$ i l% a" L" X- _7 O% V$ h
for information storage and retrieval. Methods to search, screen, recover, and use this
4 Z1 v5 Z! U# x9 U; Cinformation will provide new avenues for discovery and require a new generation of
