TRAINING VIROLOGISTS FOR THE FUTURE

How can virologists take advantage of all of these new opportunities for scholarship
! z3 a* D! Q, Y" C' E# U7 E3 Y3 yand application? To address this question, we must consider what constitutes optimum
training for virologists in the 21st century. Tomorrow’s advances will require a combination
$ {7 I$ @, y" F: B& hof small, tightly focused groups and large, multidisciplinary teams. Traditional teams of basic
1 A! S# u  V, m" \6 iscientists working with clinicians will be augmented by mathematicians, physicists, and
population biologists, among others. Integrating new technology advances with classical
6 P& m8 r/ v! p1 n9 x+ `epidemiology and clinical approaches will not be a simple pedagogical exercise. Training the
# n! z$ ?# ^0 m2 i2 A1 q, i# Znext generation of scientists who can undertake this research will require more diverse course
offerings, enhanced training opportunities, especially involving interdisciplinary
7 @) U. j) b6 f' I8 p& n2 W4 Ccollaboration and computational approaches, and instruction in teamwork. To facilitate
professional advancement, we will need to develop new strategies to recognize and reward
. T3 d- G& v# I1 G# Xindividual contributions to group scientific efforts as team science becomes more and more
5 N0 U1 j5 w# Rprevalent.

" h$ F: m! H, G/ aSystems biology approaches, large-scale genetic screens, metagenomics of host and
viral genes from related viruses present a unique challenge for training. These approaches
will produce enormous amounts of information that will challenge our capacity to integrate it
% u' V' _/ F9 Finto useful conceptual frameworks. Imaging technology will reveal the dynamics of
biological interactions at every level, yet produce huge sets of data that strain current systems
# |5 }! d) W' E$ U. a  V* dfor information storage and retrieval. Methods to search, screen, recover, and use this
% B/ F6 `, L6 Q: y$ r! g' ninformation will provide new avenues for discovery and require a new generation of
virologists with special expertise in computational methods and information technology.
