and application? To address this question, we must consider what constitutes optimum
; b& z. n: X& h2 etraining for virologists in the 21st century. Tomorrow’s advances will require a combination
$ k1 N. x) B6 g3 O% Cof small, tightly focused groups and large, multidisciplinary teams. Traditional teams of basic$ r: _$ F9 u+ u  [* f; t
scientists working with clinicians will be augmented by mathematicians, physicists, and
5 E+ ^# D- n1 `' b: m: P3 ]2 Xpopulation biologists, among others. Integrating new technology advances with classical8 b: W% c) @8 P4 _# F
epidemiology and clinical approaches will not be a simple pedagogical exercise. Training the, V, }$ |4 u# Y. @) F+ ^7 ?3 A
next generation of scientists who can undertake this research will require more diverse course
) m! a: x5 z1 B% u0 d1 D$ zofferings, enhanced training opportunities, especially involving interdisciplinary, f5 A% j; m! @. N; L
collaboration and computational approaches, and instruction in teamwork. To facilitate( ?/ Y' ^' N# h( V* Z  x$ m% }, e
professional advancement, we will need to develop new strategies to recognize and reward
+ B2 F5 Y0 C3 r. T" `( Cindividual contributions to group scientific efforts as team science becomes more and more
3 W/ Y6 s+ ~) V* K* o7 Cprevalent.# F8 D; M3 j4 i! i/ L4 R4 N
+ K! n, x7 u* t& F8 m& ]
Systems biology approaches, large-scale genetic screens, metagenomics of host and$ _8 A) e% Q9 P8 p  ]5 Y
viral genes from related viruses present a unique challenge for training. These approaches8 I! C: f( @1 x/ X4 V: q( h$ r% X
will produce enormous amounts of information that will challenge our capacity to integrate it7 b* E2 r: d: G2 s8 Z
into useful conceptual frameworks. Imaging technology will reveal the dynamics of7 ?; O) w% i% `: R
biological interactions at every level, yet produce huge sets of data that strain current systems7 V$ i  l% a" L" X- _7 O% V$ h
for information storage and retrieval. Methods to search, screen, recover, and use this
4 Z1 v5 Z! U# x9 U; Cinformation will provide new avenues for discovery and require a new generation of
2 q0 ]6 Q( _' X8 E9 L2 P. qvirologists with special expertise in computational methods and information technology.
