of small, tightly focused groups and large, multidisciplinary teams. Traditional teams of basic( c P' k# f' m. d. I" r# @/ K
scientists working with clinicians will be augmented by mathematicians, physicists, and
/ A5 f% e; ?5 w" `2 npopulation biologists, among others. Integrating new technology advances with classical) l; n; u! N; D( y
epidemiology and clinical approaches will not be a simple pedagogical exercise. Training the
/ H( k7 n! M6 }* U+ |- q. B8 }& Enext generation of scientists who can undertake this research will require more diverse course
% H0 z9 `% i" n4 a, K' i! [* Rofferings, enhanced training opportunities, especially involving interdisciplinary/ o8 @4 @/ v) y2 y3 E
collaboration and computational approaches, and instruction in teamwork. To facilitate
4 v" s# L2 b' mprofessional advancement, we will need to develop new strategies to recognize and reward

Systems biology approaches, large-scale genetic screens, metagenomics of host and
! f1 ^4 S `( d! n: Z" w% iviral genes from related viruses present a unique challenge for training. These approaches
/ N8 l. s. h5 l5 Q, Y6 B" ewill produce enormous amounts of information that will challenge our capacity to integrate it
8 X. y1 d2 ^, y% [/ finto useful conceptual frameworks. Imaging technology will reveal the dynamics of
/ Y1 X6 R+ U9 ^% c; |biological interactions at every level, yet produce huge sets of data that strain current systems( X! L2 R# L K4 F
for information storage and retrieval. Methods to search, screen, recover, and use this5 \' _( J2 }- `
information will provide new avenues for discovery and require a new generation of
5 b6 w! P( c5 K+ C! \1 x1 Mvirologists with special expertise in computational methods and information technology. |
