1 A! S# u V, m" \6 iscientists working with clinicians will be augmented by mathematicians, physicists, and9 d" i% C+ l# R" u- i
population biologists, among others. Integrating new technology advances with classical
6 P& m8 r/ v! p1 n9 x+ `epidemiology and clinical approaches will not be a simple pedagogical exercise. Training the
# n! z$ ?# ^0 m2 i2 A1 q, i# Znext generation of scientists who can undertake this research will require more diverse course6 W/ Z% \7 @5 Q Q1 h) g
offerings, enhanced training opportunities, especially involving interdisciplinary
7 @) U. j) b6 f' I8 p& n2 W4 Ccollaboration and computational approaches, and instruction in teamwork. To facilitate- D; K+ y# O5 S0 \) l- ?3 ~
professional advancement, we will need to develop new strategies to recognize and reward
. T3 d- G& v# I1 G# Xindividual contributions to group scientific efforts as team science becomes more and more

" h$ F: m! H, G/ aSystems biology approaches, large-scale genetic screens, metagenomics of host and( ]& ^$ Y, U' J7 z* Z3 U: X/ Y0 s
viral genes from related viruses present a unique challenge for training. These approaches& \& ^( `5 x: ]
will produce enormous amounts of information that will challenge our capacity to integrate it
% u' V' _/ F9 Finto useful conceptual frameworks. Imaging technology will reveal the dynamics of. G/ j& J/ g" V. U6 `7 C6 }
biological interactions at every level, yet produce huge sets of data that strain current systems
# |5 }! d) W' E$ U. a V* dfor information storage and retrieval. Methods to search, screen, recover, and use this
% B/ F6 `, L6 Q: y$ r! g' ninformation will provide new avenues for discovery and require a new generation of* P. n2 v J- O! f
virologists with special expertise in computational methods and information technology. |
