TheRole of Immunotherapy in Multiple Myeloma.
Multiplemyeloma is the second most common hematologic malignancy. The treatment of thisdisease has changed considerably over the last two decades with theintroduction to the clinical practice of novel agents such as proteasomeinhibitors and immunomodulatory drugs. Basic research efforts towards betterunderstanding of normal and missing immune surveillence in myeloma have led todevelopment of new strategies and therapies that require the engagement of theimmune system. Many of these treatments are under clinical development and havealready started providing encouraging results. We, for the second time in thelast two decades, are about to witness another shift of the paradigm in themanagement of this ailment. This review will summarize the major approaches inmyeloma immunotherapies.
