scientists working with clinicians will be augmented by mathematicians, physicists, and
" l; A% L# z* {* y0 O3 jpopulation biologists, among others. Integrating new technology advances with classical: @# o, u5 v& _! \5 w) t
epidemiology and clinical approaches will not be a simple pedagogical exercise. Training the
* h, g7 x$ b+ x7 g; Anext generation of scientists who can undertake this research will require more diverse course( U5 L. a3 W# {0 u
offerings, enhanced training opportunities, especially involving interdisciplinary
. y, @* C' V" Xcollaboration and computational approaches, and instruction in teamwork. To facilitate
, J$ i6 g% \) N2 X( uprofessional advancement, we will need to develop new strategies to recognize and reward
! W- `" X- }4 [: Z' `4 g# \+ Nindividual contributions to group scientific efforts as team science becomes more and more

) `6 P/ n9 U. R. o. K9 OSystems biology approaches, large-scale genetic screens, metagenomics of host and. [" S2 B2 ]/ J: _- f6 a
viral genes from related viruses present a unique challenge for training. These approaches
+ {9 Z. Q* z u2 j. H& E6 Lwill produce enormous amounts of information that will challenge our capacity to integrate it
; v- i" l i+ J" A! s; @, @into useful conceptual frameworks. Imaging technology will reveal the dynamics of
" {- q: J+ A, t! V# d ?& Cbiological interactions at every level, yet produce huge sets of data that strain current systems' p* n/ F+ T/ O4 X
for information storage and retrieval. Methods to search, screen, recover, and use this8 G1 {, M2 l8 q" h( \3 ~
information will provide new avenues for discovery and require a new generation of
