of small, tightly focused groups and large, multidisciplinary teams. Traditional teams of basic! b# u T. p8 M* o. M6 N
scientists working with clinicians will be augmented by mathematicians, physicists, and. G0 l* ^9 j1 k
population biologists, among others. Integrating new technology advances with classical8 I) ]* i6 F8 Y+ @
epidemiology and clinical approaches will not be a simple pedagogical exercise. Training the$ y! j4 s% I9 h* T% o% n- P" @
next generation of scientists who can undertake this research will require more diverse course
3 R9 t k8 ~* a6 K" K: ^2 N! `offerings, enhanced training opportunities, especially involving interdisciplinary
5 c5 A# F. f2 f; {" pcollaboration and computational approaches, and instruction in teamwork. To facilitate1 Q5 F( f& S: B5 X+ r" n
professional advancement, we will need to develop new strategies to recognize and reward
$ t1 s+ ], t; F2 h8 Xindividual contributions to group scientific efforts as team science becomes more and more# i/ M) i) {* s z( R7 s" c/ F! M

# C" h# Q3 h# ]+ C& h) mSystems biology approaches, large-scale genetic screens, metagenomics of host and1 c1 m3 [, d- i1 e
viral genes from related viruses present a unique challenge for training. These approaches, W8 e' s9 `' k0 n, y5 M* q9 s* r- x
will produce enormous amounts of information that will challenge our capacity to integrate it
5 s8 B% T. A4 l8 W, I. `" Xinto useful conceptual frameworks. Imaging technology will reveal the dynamics of
9 Z- d' }- l. u: `1 W% Y: k- O9 G( _biological interactions at every level, yet produce huge sets of data that strain current systems" {1 w9 K! k# H5 g
for information storage and retrieval. Methods to search, screen, recover, and use this" P; k7 v" R4 E" e9 D) c0 {
information will provide new avenues for discovery and require a new generation of
* L* G- `2 D/ R% _* x* fvirologists with special expertise in computational methods and information technology. |
