scientists working with clinicians will be augmented by mathematicians, physicists, and+ f+ w! G9 K: o( y1 K8 O9 H$ R
population biologists, among others. Integrating new technology advances with classical
7 a$ s( |( V0 o5 Yepidemiology and clinical approaches will not be a simple pedagogical exercise. Training the
$ u" ] ?4 G+ d, Z& Z, [) o. r) Gnext generation of scientists who can undertake this research will require more diverse course
+ P* \% A& ?2 J3 d4 C1 `offerings, enhanced training opportunities, especially involving interdisciplinary* X% r5 }# E% f0 K( H! V
collaboration and computational approaches, and instruction in teamwork. To facilitate$ D- S+ F) d9 ]+ P+ C5 _; F# F+ |# k
professional advancement, we will need to develop new strategies to recognize and reward
# ^* }" h- K. v' t. s/ c1 C3 Uindividual contributions to group scientific efforts as team science becomes more and more( l/ S: c% P/ u9 s

4 m% F/ e9 f/ j: T/ [0 x @. q% RSystems biology approaches, large-scale genetic screens, metagenomics of host and6 D- ]" S2 y, E) {
viral genes from related viruses present a unique challenge for training. These approaches/ n* J! L4 \( N! g7 m
will produce enormous amounts of information that will challenge our capacity to integrate it
- _) S1 ^: e) I: n& n- H. _7 v4 v5 Zinto useful conceptual frameworks. Imaging technology will reveal the dynamics of
$ G$ ^2 q6 y/ i2 Tbiological interactions at every level, yet produce huge sets of data that strain current systems
3 ]- p7 S! R# lfor information storage and retrieval. Methods to search, screen, recover, and use this9 B# S7 a' w# b
information will provide new avenues for discovery and require a new generation of( n+ w) ~& }: X g1 h) e& s$ I
virologists with special expertise in computational methods and information technology. |
