training for virologists in the 21st century. Tomorrow’s advances will require a combination
% E2 T" R2 [. [% xof small, tightly focused groups and large, multidisciplinary teams. Traditional teams of basic
. d& W1 m* J" j8 f2 cscientists working with clinicians will be augmented by mathematicians, physicists, and
. c+ S" p7 u+ K0 C3 h! Gpopulation biologists, among others. Integrating new technology advances with classical% j4 P2 n$ Z4 r& |) u. o' @
epidemiology and clinical approaches will not be a simple pedagogical exercise. Training the! ]* } y4 O* E+ p. \6 H, N* G
next generation of scientists who can undertake this research will require more diverse course
# G3 r! X, m% Y0 E- S( E* f* @offerings, enhanced training opportunities, especially involving interdisciplinary$ T) j7 [0 E$ S4 a x* O
collaboration and computational approaches, and instruction in teamwork. To facilitate ^+ Z$ Y6 M$ M& @8 F. h8 _# d3 O
professional advancement, we will need to develop new strategies to recognize and reward9 z9 e6 X' o2 P# x' ]
individual contributions to group scientific efforts as team science becomes more and more2 C8 _4 H% E! G1 t# G
prevalent.8 O, q4 U: ^* s

Systems biology approaches, large-scale genetic screens, metagenomics of host and! |$ g: T; U0 c0 O4 J- \) v
viral genes from related viruses present a unique challenge for training. These approaches$ H. b: A/ K& |+ T
will produce enormous amounts of information that will challenge our capacity to integrate it
" S0 X/ Z# Z- C1 pinto useful conceptual frameworks. Imaging technology will reveal the dynamics of$ k. M! T; W/ {* d% M1 W3 O
biological interactions at every level, yet produce huge sets of data that strain current systems
4 [2 t7 V: j: n) Bfor information storage and retrieval. Methods to search, screen, recover, and use this
% ^5 o: s; O+ L; v7 V+ Uinformation will provide new avenues for discovery and require a new generation of P- j$ M/ w' O& x/ x
virologists with special expertise in computational methods and information technology. |
