training for virologists in the 21st century. Tomorrow’s advances will require a combination' i1 S9 ]4 M/ T; K
of small, tightly focused groups and large, multidisciplinary teams. Traditional teams of basic5 M& |5 J* E' _
scientists working with clinicians will be augmented by mathematicians, physicists, and7 v y6 a/ x% ~' j
population biologists, among others. Integrating new technology advances with classical
4 i7 U0 D2 i6 b9 V* H3 s8 t2 q% B4 \4 \epidemiology and clinical approaches will not be a simple pedagogical exercise. Training the9 a' u8 ~; E( b4 t
next generation of scientists who can undertake this research will require more diverse course+ U) @& V" A1 |; ?
offerings, enhanced training opportunities, especially involving interdisciplinary8 ^+ z; P9 L, T3 \" z! r
collaboration and computational approaches, and instruction in teamwork. To facilitate( `' L8 u7 [* K" R; T9 u/ }! Z6 O' X" ?
professional advancement, we will need to develop new strategies to recognize and reward j6 L0 o. l( [+ F2 k2 y, u
individual contributions to group scientific efforts as team science becomes more and more9 d% Z$ g! ~9 u
prevalent.
( P, ?; [% r7 c8 |% o+ @' j/ }. }8 Z8 b5 u- `9 i
Systems biology approaches, large-scale genetic screens, metagenomics of host and
* D) y& M& e4 L. V' y/ |6 P2 }. J' x6 X/ hviral genes from related viruses present a unique challenge for training. These approaches' Y' r* S+ f) X# g' f
will produce enormous amounts of information that will challenge our capacity to integrate it% ?: ]- J; |* f5 |5 N
into useful conceptual frameworks. Imaging technology will reveal the dynamics of
1 t# W4 z; }; X& w% ?: _& u2 ibiological interactions at every level, yet produce huge sets of data that strain current systems1 _# e3 D$ @& p0 y4 _. k7 c# V
for information storage and retrieval. Methods to search, screen, recover, and use this2 ?. G+ E, f& B
information will provide new avenues for discovery and require a new generation of
' W* c4 v: [9 v# A! H( hvirologists with special expertise in computational methods and information technology. |
