and application? To address this question, we must consider what constitutes optimum

( f( n- |, Q0 iof small, tightly focused groups and large, multidisciplinary teams. Traditional teams of basic3 D' f5 R( w. {$ L7 x! W9 `6 {
scientists working with clinicians will be augmented by mathematicians, physicists, and! Q$ m4 P: D( N: c+ D( `/ h
population biologists, among others. Integrating new technology advances with classical
3 B- d+ W$ B+ b' o g2 y) v- lepidemiology and clinical approaches will not be a simple pedagogical exercise. Training the
* P& @4 w! [) p. ?next generation of scientists who can undertake this research will require more diverse course* c5 Y! @7 M f0 N1 f
offerings, enhanced training opportunities, especially involving interdisciplinary, z! F/ N2 ?" T: E6 x/ O- s# y% L3 X
collaboration and computational approaches, and instruction in teamwork. To facilitate) ?# w ], I# |
professional advancement, we will need to develop new strategies to recognize and reward' `) S6 K5 J; {. o7 S5 l+ V8 i5 g
individual contributions to group scientific efforts as team science becomes more and more; A# U1 r- ^5 K0 o
prevalent.6 P1 P# `2 ?7 n# ~3 ?/ g; v& `4 p
8 j0 u, i3 Y- z+ j7 c4 BSystems biology approaches, large-scale genetic screens, metagenomics of host and+ G+ Q" F6 e* | p4 O( w7 n
viral genes from related viruses present a unique challenge for training. These approaches* W! i1 r* Z1 H( v
will produce enormous amounts of information that will challenge our capacity to integrate it( P+ e Z8 j% m" T* n8 y" c
into useful conceptual frameworks. Imaging technology will reveal the dynamics of
H6 w6 m2 H: Q1 _biological interactions at every level, yet produce huge sets of data that strain current systems
; j+ c! ~) g& d7 z4 afor information storage and retrieval. Methods to search, screen, recover, and use this- s o6 u) S6 p+ [& V
information will provide new avenues for discovery and require a new generation of
( r/ J. O+ W( O l" J2 T) U8 Bvirologists with special expertise in computational methods and information technology. |
